Position : Intern – Water Quality

The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) is a regional planning agency serving greater Cleveland. As the region's Metropolitan Planning Organization and Areawide Water Quality Management Agency, NOACA conducts transportation and environmental planning for a five-county region that is home to 2.1 million people and includes the counties of Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, and Medina.

Job Description

The Water Quality Planning Intern is responsible for learning and applying the skills needed to perform and assist other staff members with assigned tasks. The position will conduct research, planning, and evaluation activities in furtherance of the mission of the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) as a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and an Areawide Water Quality Management Agency (Areawide). This is a part-time position, working 20 hours per week for a 12-month duration from the date of hire.

  • Specific areas of work and knowledge to be acquired during the internship include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Acquire a basic understanding of areawide water quality management planning, and federal and state procedures
  • Complete assigned tasks in the areas of wastewater, stormwater, drinking water and watershed planning
  • Support the maintenance and implementation of NOACA's Clean Water 2020 (208) Plan through activities such as:
    • Review information and contribute to weekly reports on Ohio EPA issuances of permits and public notices
    • Assist with review of permits-to-install (PTIs) and other wastewater system applications to ensure consistency with the Clean Water 2020 (208) Plan
    • Use ESRI ArcGIS Pro to edit and update maps with various geoprocessing tools (edit vertices, align features, merge, dissolve, clip, buffer, etc.)

Minimum Requirements

  • Undergraduate student of junior or senior status or graduate student enrolled in an accredited bachelor's or master's degree program and majoring in planning, environmental studies, biology, water resources or related field
  • Has an interest in and possesses basic knowledge of water quality issues in Northeast Ohio
  • Experience conducting general research
  • Experience performing qualitative and quantitative data gathering and analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Willingness to demonstrate initiative and an interest in learning new skills
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

Compensation & Benefits

  • $17.00 - $20.00 per hour, commensurate with experience and level of education
  • Enrollment in Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) pension program
  • Participation in NOACA's monthly transit pass subsidy program
