Position Announcement

The Department of Earth Science at Utah Valley University (UVU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Geology, beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. by August 2026 in sedimentary geology or a closely related field. We invite applications from candidates with expertise in any area of sedimentary geology, including, but not limited to, sequence stratigraphy, basin analysis, paleontology, sedimentary geochemistry, or paleoclimatology. We are a multidisciplinary Earth Science department with a strong dedication to empowering students through effective science education and research opportunities in preparation for a wide range of Earth Science career pathways.

Teaching expectations will include lower-division General Education science courses, such as Introduction to Geology, an upper division Sedimentary Geology course, co-teaching geology field camp, and the potential for another upper division course in the candidate's area of expertise. The successful candidate will 1) be committed to excellent teaching that is effective at engaging a broad range of student backgrounds, 2) be active in scholarship and interested in involving undergraduate students in the research process, and 3) be committed to providing service aligned with the mission of the University and supporting programs in the Department of Earth Science.

The Department of Earth Science includes 13 full-time faculty with a wide range of expertise. and offers bachelor's degrees in Geography and Environmental Studies, Geology, Earth Science Education, Environmental Science and Management, and a certificate in Geographic Information Systems. The department has excellent facilities that include a 24-workstation GIS laboratory and additional high-powered computer workstations, survey-grade GNSS equipment, several sUAS for low altitude aerial photography and remote-sensing, and geochemical analytical facilities. Our workstations are well equipped with software including ArcGIS Pro, Agisoft Metashape Pro, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft 365, Trimble Pathfinder and Business Center, and MATLAB. The department has active collaborations with the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and Utah State University as well as local industry and governmental entities such as Utah's Department of Natural Resources (), the Utah Geological Survey ().

UVU is located within the Provo-Orem metropolitan area (Utah Valley ) which has one of the fastest growing technology sectors in the nation and is one of the fastest growing communities in the US with a 30.8% growth rate between 2010 and 2022 and a population of nearly 750,000 people. Summary of Responsibilities

  • Teaches introductory and/or upper division courses in geology and/or physical geography, and other courses as assigned. Plans, prepares, teaches, and follows an approved course of study with measurable objectives and student outcomes for each course taught. Maintains and submits accurate and current records concerning student accountability, attendance, performance, and follow-up. Maintains a student-oriented approach to education.
  • Instructs, manages, and supervises individuals and groups in the classroom by the following methods: demonstration, discussion, visual aids, etc. Incorporates methods of active and engaged learning into coursework, including, as appropriate for each class, student projects that deal with local and regional geography and/or geology issues. Holds regular office hours as well as interacts with and advises students in and out of class. Maintains and submits accurate and current records concerning student accountability, attendance, performance, and follow-up. Maintains a student-oriented approach to education. Supervises student research, including research that focuses on local, regional, and/or international geology and/or geography issues. Assists students in preparing their research work for presentation at professional meetings, facilitates student travel to those meetings, and accompanies students to the meetings. Mentors student professional growth, including student interaction with the professional geographic community. Becomes engaged with the local and regional professional and academic geology communities. Coordinates cooperative work experience programs for students as assigned.
  • Participates in appropriate professional, service, scholarly, and collaborative activities. Serves on campus committees as deemed appropriate.
  • Assists counselors, the Department's chairperson, staff, and faculty in maintaining and developing an effective geology program, as well as other programs in the Department. Participates in College and University meetings. Participates in University outreach, including student recruitment and public education activities.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a terminal, earned degree appropriate to the discipline. ABD accepted. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university. Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a Ph.D. degree in geology or a closely related field is required.
Demonstrable excellence in teaching preferred.
Experience teaching introductory courses in geology and physical geography preferred.
