CalRecycle is seeking an enthusiastic Environmental Scientist to join our team and contribute to the success of California’s Mattress Stewardship Program!

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Act as a co-lead overseeing California’s Mattress Stewardship Program.
  • Independently perform environmental and natural resource management analysis, research, surveys, investigations, and studies.
  • Interact with a variety of colleagues and external interested parties, including other government agencies, businesses, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Prepare regulatory and compliance documents, as well as other technical reports and materials.
  • Respond to complex inquiries from the public and draft non-routine correspondence regarding the program.
  • Conduct other related work to implement CalRecycle's product stewardship programs and initiatives.
  • Provide scientific expertise and consultative technical advice to various external entities.

This position requires that you possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your applications. This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense. Beginning July 1, 2026, it is anticipated the position will be office-centered and employees will be expected to report to the office at least four days per week.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including experience developing and delivering presentations and developing and completing written work products that communicate complex scientific topics for non-experts and policymakers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams (and others from diverse backgrounds) and with external entities, including other government agencies, businesses, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and successfully manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Strong project planning, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Analytical and research experience, including experience collecting, analyzing, and evaluating quantitative and qualitative data to support environmental policy and decision-making.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, and other office productivity software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, Access, Adobe Acrobat, web conferencing software (e.g., Teams, Zoom), etc.
