Position Summary

Rice University has an exciting opening for an experienced compensation professional to join our innovative, service-oriented HR team as a compensation analyst. As a member of the total rewards team, you will serve as a member of the project team for the total rewards study, a strategic initiative in our efforts to position Rice as an employer of choice in Houston and among our peer universities.

In this position, you will be responsible for the analysis, administration, and implementation of competitive compensation programs that support Rice's ability to attract, retain, motivate, and reward excellent employees while ensuring internal equity and compliance with related government regulations. You will have the opportunity to contribute to special projects, identify solutions to challenging situations, and serve as a key contact for compensation matters, providing expertise and guidance to campus leaders.

Hiring Range: The salary range for this position is $66,000 to $74,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Work Location

Hybrid position: "This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Three days in the office after meeting the 6-month probationary period. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change."

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience
    • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis
  • Three years of human resources experience with at least one year of experience in compensation, workforce or data analytics, talent acquisition, or other closely related field
  • Skills Required:
    • Strong data analysis skills, including reporting and data visualizations
    • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and other data analysis tools
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Solid understanding of compensation principles, practices, and regulations
    • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
    • Attention to detail and accuracy
    • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively handle highly sensitive and personal information with sound judgment, tact, and discretion
    • Critical thinking to identify alternative solutions

Essential Functions

  • Reviews job descriptions; applies job evaluation techniques to determine the appropriate job classification and exemption status
  • Participates in and/or assists in conducting salary surveys
  • Performs market analysis to determine pay trends in support of the annual salary program
  • Reviews, updates and completes benchmarking for jobs
  • Provides guidance regarding individual salary determinations
  • Trains and guides managers to administer the University's compensation program on a consistent, equitable, and legally compliant basis
  • Interprets, administers, and recommends revisions to compensation policies, programs, and procedures, and ensures compliance with applicable state/federal statutes and regulations
  • Reviews, updates, and drafts content for communications and website content
  • Provides research and analyses on existing and future compensation programs, policies, and/or practices
  • Participates in the configuration and testing of HCM and compensation systems
  • Manages and completes projects as directed
  • Runs monthly reports and conducts audits as needed
  • Completes other duties as assigned

Preferences

  • 2-3 years of experience in a compensation role
  • Proficient in market pricing methodologies and salary survey analysis
  • Familiarity with MarketPay, Tableau, Oracle Cloud, and/or other similar systems and applications
  • Effective relationship builder and teammate
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and/or improve processes
  • Ability to negotiate and influence
  • Highly collaborative, works with all stakeholders to deliver results and keep others informed
