Position Overview

As a Cloud DevOps Engineer, you will be a key member of the Cloud Services team within SLAC IT, playing a vital role in designing, deploying, and maintaining cloud infrastructure to enable scalable, secure, and efficient operations. This position integrates cloud engineering expertise with DevOps principles to support SLAC¿s mission-critical research and administrative activities by building and maintaining reliable, high-performance systems.

Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will focus on automating workflows, streamlining deployment pipelines, and optimizing cloud-based environments. With an emphasis on AWS platforms, infrastructure-as-code (IaC), and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices, you¿ll help enhance SLAC¿s cloud capabilities and operational efficiency. SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park, CA. As a SLAC staff, this position is an employee of Stanford University.

Your Specific Responsibilities Include

  • Design and implement scalable, secure solutions within the AWS ecosystem and other cloud platforms.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible.
  • Build and optimize CI/CD pipelines to automate deployments and updates.
  • Monitor and enhance cloud infrastructure for performance, cost-efficiency, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with development teams to align cloud architecture with application requirements.
  • Implement and enforce robust security practices, including identity and access management, encryption, and compliance standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve cloud infrastructure and deployment issues to minimize downtime.
  • Evaluate emerging cloud technologies and recommend improvements to systems and processes.
  • Support operational needs by maintaining cloud-native systems, applications, and utilities.
  • Address system emergencies promptly to safeguard user data and ensure service continuity.
  • Plan and implement strategies for cloud resource capacity, load distribution, and system integration.
  • Engage in long-term planning to advance cloud systems and infrastructure evolution.

To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda, VPC, IAM).
  • Familiarity with containerization (e.g., Docker) and orchestration tools (e.g., Kubernetes).
  • Proficiency in scripting or programming languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including DNS, VPNs, and load balancers.
  • Experience with native cloud monitoring and logging tools.
  • Knowledge of security best practices in cloud environments.
  • Collaborative mindset with excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Experience developing/implementing a business continuation and disaster recovery plan.
  • Proven ability to develop appropriate plans to meet computing needs.
  • Proven ability to lead and work on large/complex system deployment projects in a team environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $148,162 - $168,602 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
