Job Summary:

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as Spectrum’s most senior financial executive, with fiduciary accountability to the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors. This role provides strategic oversight of all financial operations, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission, clinical delivery goals, and long-term sustainability. The CFO is responsible for enterprise-wide budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, cash flow, risk management, audit preparation, and compliance with all applicable nonprofit and healthcare financial regulations. Working in close collaboration with executive leadership, the CFO plays a key role in supporting the financial infrastructure behind Spectrum’s primary care, gender affirming care, and sexual health services. In partnership with Spectrum’s 340B team, the CFO ensures accurate financial reporting and integration of 340B-related revenue, supporting both operational transparency and program integrity. This role requires a collaborative and mission aligned leader who can build strong working relationships with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and Medical Director. Each serves as a peer within the executive leadership team. The CFO also fosters trust and accountability across departments, ensuring that financial stewardship is data informed, transparent, and rooted in community responsive care. This position represents the highest level of financial leadership at Spectrum and is accountable for maintaining integrity, transparency, and legal compliance in all fiscal functions. The CFO is expected to uphold and advance the organization’s values while serving as a strategic partner to the Chief Executive Officer and Board in fulfilling Spectrum’s mission of equitable, whole person healthcare. 

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management

  • Work collaboratively with the Revenue Cycle and Billing teams to ensure accurate financial tracking of claims, EHR billing, and collections processes.
  • Provide strategic financial guidance and insight in partnership with the CEO, COO, Medical Director, and Board, ensuring alignment across executive leadership and governance.
  • Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow and financial analysis
  • Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals
  • Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems
  • Prepare and present monthly and quarterly financial reports to the CEO and Board of Directors, providing analysis and recommendations as needed
  • Be particularly nimble at highlighting financial trends and possess exceptional ability at presenting complex financial information in a clear and meaningful manner.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including tax filings, audits, and other reporting requirements
  • Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, other financial service providers, vendors, insurance providers, legal and governmental agencies.
  • Partner with the grants lead to align funding opportunities with organizational priorities, providing oversight of all financial reporting for grant compliance.

Budgeting and Forecasting 

  • Develop and oversee the annual budgeting process, working closely with program managers and other stakeholders to develop realistic and achievable budgets
  • Collaborate with the director overseeing SMCC’s 340B program to ensure 340B-related revenue is accurately reflected in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting systems
  • Monitor actual performance against budget and provide periodic updates and analysis to the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Develop and maintain forecasting models that support long term planning and inform organizational decision making across all service lines, including primary care, behavioral health, and sexual health services.
  • Support leaders across the organization in understanding budget targets, interpreting variance reports, and using financial tools to strengthen department level accountability.

Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Su pport the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and Medical Director in the development and execution of strategic plans that advance the organization's mission, financial resilience, and clinical impact. 
  • Participate as an active member of the executive leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy and ensuring that financial planning is aligned with growth goals, capital investments, and long-term service delivery.
  • Provide updates to the Board of Directors through periodic engagement with the Treasurer and Finance Committee. Collaborate with other Board committee members as needed to support financial decision making, planning, and policy development.
  • Provide strategic financial direction which supports the organization.
  • Lead and mentor the finance team to foster a high performing, service-oriented culture that enhances accuracy, accountability, continuous learning, and professional development.
  • Collaborate with other senior leaders, primarily with the direction of the CEO and CMO to develop and implement strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals.

Cash Flow/Cash Projections/Banking Relationships

  • Maintain real-time awareness and understanding of the organization’s cash position, with the ability and technical skills to project the cash position, within reason, for a period of 6 months based on the modeling of inflows and outflows.
  • Provide technical guidance and sensitivity analysis and modeling on the best use of cash reserves- what are the appropriate levels of cash reserves to provide safe harbor, best investment strategies (with guidance from the finance committee and Board members), and strategies (in collaboration with CEO/COO and Medical Director) on the use of funds to focus on spending levels that are aligned with The organization’s goals and mission in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • Ensure that all spending is aligned with the organization’s mission, and that purchasing and contract terms are reviewed objectively and negotiated in the organization’s best interest.
  • Build and maintain banking and financial service relationships that support liquidity, secure access to capital, and long-term fiscal sustainability.
  • Work with CEO, COO and Medical Director to support effective presentations for potential revenues and inflows that fit within the organization’s core competencies and to specifically target those opportunities that are most attractive and have the greatest likelihood for success. 

Board Relations and Reporting

  • Provide clear, timely financial reporting to the Board of Directors, including periodic updates on organizational performance, budget adherence, and emerging risks or opportunities.
  • Prepare materials for Finance Committee and full Board meetings in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer and Treasurer.
  • Present relevant analysis and context to support informed decision making.
  • Collaborate with the CEO and Board of Directors to develop and implement financial policies and procedures that align with the organization’s values and strategic goals.
  • Represent the organization at internal and external events and meetings, providing financial guidance and support as needed.
  • Serve as a financial resource to the Board and its committees, ensuring transparency, accountability, and responsiveness to governance responsibilities.

Tax Filing, Compliance and Audit

  • Oversee all tax filings and compliance requirements, ensuring that the organization follows all relevant laws and regulations
  • Manage the annual audit, with external auditors and assure that all information is provided on a timely and complete manner. This extends to include the effective and timely implementation of any recommended audit recommendations and to present the rationale of such audit recommendations to the CEO, COO, Medical Director and Treasurer and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Lead the organization’s preparation and review of the IRS Form 990. Confirm accuracy, completeness, and timely filing. Support Board review of the final return before submission. 
  • Maintain strong working relationships with external partners including auditors, insurance providers, legal advisors and regulatory agencies. 
  • Ensure compliance with all donors and grant requirements including reporting and use of grant funds. 

 

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA or CPA helpful but not required. 
  • At least 7 years of progressive experience in financial leadership. Nonprofit and healthcare experience are strongly preferred but not required.

  • Proven track record of successful financial management, including experience developing and implementing financial strategies, managing budgets, overseeing financial reporting and compliance and exemplary and proactive operational and financial analysis.

  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience building and leading high-performing teams

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
